# Is Windex Ruining Your Glass Shower Doors? What Arizona Homeowners Must Know

It seems like the obvious choice. Windex cleans windows, so it should clean shower glass too, right? Wrong. In Arizona, where hard water runs 15 to 25 grains per gallon, the ammonia in Windex reacts with mineral residue to permanently etch glass shower doors. After restoring thousands of showers across the Phoenix metro, we can tell you exactly what is happening to your glass and what to use instead.

## What Windex Actually Does to Shower Glass

Standard Windex contains ammonia, isopropyl alcohol, and surfactants designed for vertical, dry, low-mineral surfaces. On a shower door coated with Arizona hard water residue, the ammonia chemically reacts with the calcium and magnesium deposits, accelerating the process called silica corrosion. The result is microscopic pitting that permanently scatters light and makes the glass look cloudy even when it is perfectly clean.

## Why Arizona Hard Water Makes This So Much Worse

Most of the East Valley sits between 15 and 25 grains per gallon of water hardness, which is classified as 'very hard'. Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek, and Scottsdale all fall in this range.
