# Is Pressure Washing Safe for a Travertine Pool Deck?

By Lazona Tile Care Team

No. A standard pressure washer will damage a travertine pool deck, and in Arizona it usually does it on the first pass. Travertine is a soft, naturally porous calcium carbonate stone, roughly 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale. High pressure blasts open the pores, blows the fill out of the natural voids, strips the joint sand between pavers, and leaves wand marks that no cleaning ever removes. Safe cleaning happens at low pressure with the right chemistry and a surface cleaner, not a zero degree tip.

## What Pressure Washing Actually Does

Damage by Component

Component

What High Pressure Does

Repair Cost Direction

Travertine face

Opens pores, creates a fuzzy etched texture that soils faster

Requires honing to correct

Natural voids and factory fill

Blows out the epoxy or cementitious fill, leaving holes

Hole filling, priced per area

Joint sand between pavers

Washes out, pavers begin to rock and shift

Full re-sanding and re-setting of high spots

Setting bed and base

Water intrusion undermines the base, creating dips

The expensive one, sections lifted and reset

Wand marks

Permanent striping visible in raking sunlight

Mechanical resurfacing of the whole field

The damage rarely shows up during the wash. It shows up two months later as rocking pavers, sunken sections near the deck edge, and a deck that gets dirty twice as fast as it used to.

## Why Arizona Decks Are Especially Vulnerable

- Travertine pavers over a sand-set base are the dominant pool deck build in Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek and Scottsdale, and sand-set assemblies depend entirely on the joint sand staying put
- Pool chemistry already softens the stone at the coping and waterline, so those are the first areas to fail under pressure
- Monsoon runoff finds any washed-out joint and moves base material underneath
- Intense UV and 115 degree surface temperatures accelerate any sealer failure that pressure washing starts

## The Safe Way to Clean a Travertine Pool Deck

- Dry sweep and remove organic debris first, so nothing is ground into the stone
- Apply a pH-neutral or mildly alkaline stone-safe cleaner, never an acid and never chlorine bleach at strength
- Let it dwell, then agitate with a soft rotary brush rather than a jet
- Rinse at low pressure through a flat surface cleaner that distributes force, not a concentrated wand tip
- Fill any open voids, re-sand joints with a stabilized polymeric or silica sand appropriate to the assembly, and reset any rocking pavers
- Seal with a breathable penetrating sealer suited to Arizona UV, not a glossy film that will peel in a season

If a company shows up to clean your travertine deck with nothing but a pressure washer and a hose, that is your cue. Ask what chemistry they are using, what pressure they run, and whether re-sanding is included in the quote.

## Already Pressure Washed? Here Is What Is Recoverable

Most decks are. Open pores and light etching hone out mechanically. Blown-out voids can be filled and color matched. Washed joints get re-sanded, and pavers that have started to rock get lifted and reset on corrected base material. What is genuinely hard to fix is a deck where water has been driven under the pavers repeatedly and the base has migrated, because then you are rebuilding a section rather than restoring a surface. We cover the full process and project examples on our [pool deck restoration page](/pool-deck-restoration) and the broader stone work on our [travertine restoration page](/travertine-restoration).

## Maintenance That Keeps a Deck Out of Trouble

Sweep it, rinse it with a garden hose rather than a machine, keep pool chemistry balanced so splash-out is not acidic, address a sunken paver the season it appears instead of the year after, and re-seal on the interval the sealer actually calls for in this climate. A travertine deck maintained that way lasts decades. One pressure washed annually rarely makes ten years.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can you pressure wash a travertine pool deck?

Not safely with standard equipment. Travertine is soft and porous, so high pressure opens the pores, removes factory fill from natural voids, strips joint sand between pavers, and leaves permanent wand marks. Cleaning should be done with stone-safe chemistry, soft agitation, and low pressure through a flat surface cleaner.

### What PSI is safe for travertine?

Well under typical consumer machine output, and always through a distributing surface cleaner rather than a concentrated tip. The variable that matters more than the number is the tip, the distance, and whether the chemistry did the work first.

### How do I know if my deck was damaged?

Look for a chalky or fuzzy texture on the stone face, open pits where fill used to be, visible striping in raking sunlight, gaps between pavers where sand is missing, and any paver that rocks under foot.

### Does travertine need to be sealed in Arizona?

Yes. A breathable penetrating sealer slows staining from pool chemicals, sunscreen, organics and hard water, and it protects the surface between cleanings. Film-forming glossy sealers are a poor choice outdoors here because UV and heat cause them to peel.

### How much does travertine pool deck restoration cost?

Pool decks are quoted on site because condition, joint state, void filling and re-sanding drive the labor far more than square footage. Our residential service minimum is $750, and there is no trip charge in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa or Tempe.
